Hike the Gulf Islands with Islander Charles Kahn

June 9, 2011

Gap Adventures (located at 109-1965 W. 4th Avenue, Vancouver) hosts an interesting and informative talk and slide show with Salt Spring resident and outdoor enthusiast Charles Kahn — based on his newly released guide book Hiking the Gulf Islands of British Columbia — on Thursday, June 30 at 6:30pm.

Kahn will share some of his favourite hikes, reveal some of the best places to see wildflowers in the summer, explain how to get the most from your hiking trips, and show some of the most beautiful beaches and shorelines the Gulf Islands have to offer.

His new edition of Hiking the Gulf Island of British Columbia has been fully updated and expanded and includes something for everyone — walks, hikes and even paddling suggestions for kayakers.

A separate chapter is dedicated to each island in the Strait of Georgia — including the often-overlooked Texada, Lasqueti, Thetis and Bowen Islands — and trail locations are illustrated with helpful maps. At-a-glance information is provided with a five-star rating system for each hiking trail described, and includes a short description of the hike, its length, the time required to hike it, its degree of difficulty, how to access it and any cautions.

In addition to the paddling suggestions and launch sites provided for each island, the book contains up-to-date information on hiking trails in the area’s marine parks, including the spectacular Gulf Islands National Park Reserve — 36 square kilometres of land and marine area scattered over 15 islands.

Charles Kahn has worked as a freelance editor and writer for over thirty years and has authored numerous travel articles. He has edited and co-authored several textbooks and is also the author of Salt Spring: The Story of an Island. Kahn was born in Montreal, Quebec, and has lived on Salt Spring Island, BC, for almost 20 years. He is an active member of Salt Spring’s hiking and kayaking clubs, as well as the local park and recreation commission’s Trails Committee.

The slide show will take place at Gap Adventures Vancouver Concept Store at 109-1965 W. 4th Avenue. The event is free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please phone Gap Adventures at (604) 694 6669.
