Nightwood Launches Two Books in Toronto!

Posted: May 26, 2011

Two Nightwood Editions authors will be teaming up to deliver an unforgettable joint launch in Toronto this June. Join poets Nick Thran and Shane Rhodes in celebrating their newly released titles at Type Books (883 Queen St West) on Thursday, June 9th from 6 to 8pm. Toronto author Nick Thran will be reading from his second poetry collection, Earworm, and Shane Rhodes will be reading from his fourth poetry collection, Err.

In Earworm, Nick Thran presents a quirky collage of pop culture, art and nostalgia, permeated with contemplative musings on the multitude of small details that fill up our everyday lives. This eclectic collection takes in topics ranging from cartoons to Caravaggio to cicadas, expressed in a comparable variety of poetic forms. In Shane Rhodes’s Err, sex, booze, war and wordplay collide in a verbal cocktail of vibrant musicality that tackles everything from AIDS to martinis with effortless style and wit. Err has also gained media attention for featuring dedications to Canadian breweries and distilleries in exchange for free alcohol.

Nick Thran is the author of one previous collection of poetry, Every Inadequate Name (Insomniac Press, 2006). His poems have appeared in numerous publications across Canada, including: Arc, The Best Canadian Poetry 2010, Geist, Maisonneuve, Matrix, The National Post and The Walrus. Since growing up in western Canada, southern Spain and southern California, Nick has spent the last few years living in Toronto, Ontario and Brooklyn, New York.

Shane Rhodes is the author of five collections of poetry: The Wireless Room (NeWest Press, 2000), which won the Alberta Book Award for poetry, Tengo Sed (Greenboathouse, 2004), Holding Pattern (NeWest, 2002), which won the Archibald Lampman Award, The Bindery (NeWest, 2007), which won the Lampman-Scott Award, and Err (2011). His poetry has also appeared in a number of Canadian poetry anthologies including Seminal: The Anthology of Canada’s Gay Male Poets and Breathing Fire 2. Rhodes lives in Ottawa, Ontario.
