Tribute and Book Launch for BC Poet Kuldip Gill

Posted: October 30, 2009

Please join Caitlin Press on Sunday, November 1st at 2pm for an afternoon of remembrance and tribute as we celebrate the life and work of Kuldip Gill as well as four other fine Vancouver-area poets who passed away this past year: Robin Blaser, David Dawson, Gerry Gilbert, and Billy Little. This event will take place in the Celebration Hall at the Mountain View Cemetery and will consist of readings and tributes by George Bowering, Elizabeth Bachinsky, Kate Braid, Sue McCaslin, Marisa Alps, Meredith Quartermain, Oana Avasilichioaei, Jamie Reid, Miriam Nichols, and hosts Stephen Collis and Brad Cran, Vancouver's Poet Laureate.

The afternoon event will also include the launch of Valley Sutra, which was completed by Gill a few months prior to her passing. This posthumous publication is Gill’s tribute to India and Canada--her two beloved homelands--and offers a mixture of smells, tastes and textures: the steam of hot rotis rising from metal lunchboxes at the mill; the lush flesh of mango offered by a gentle grandfather; and the sensual feeling of a silk sari.

Gill’s highly acclaimed first book, Dharma Rasa, received a BC Book Award in 2000 and, in 2005, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of letters from the University College of the Fraser Valley. She taught at UBC, SFU, and at the University College of the Fraser Valley, and she served as the president of the Immigrant and Visible Minority Women of BC. She also spent time on the boards of the Vancouver YWCA and the Vancouver Chief Constable’s Diversity Advisory Committee.
