Mayor Robertson announces Crazy Canucks as a winning title of One Book, One Vancouver

Posted: April 23, 2009

On Thursday, April 23 at Vancouver City Hall, Mayor Gregor Robertson Announced the winning One Book, One Vancouver: The Host City Reads titles: Crazy Canucks, by Janet Love Morrison and The Farm Team, by Linda Bailey.

To celebrate Vancouver hosting the 2010 Winter Games and to help spread the Olympic spirit throughout the city leading up to the Games, Vancouver Public Library’s signature One Book, One Vancouver program features two great sports-themed books this year.

Mayor Gregor Robertson joined Library Board Chair Joan Andersen, the authors and very special guest Steve Podborski, Olympic Downhill medallist and member of Canada’s legendary Crazy Canucks ski team, to announce the winners of the eighth annual city-wide book club, One Book, One Vancouver.

One Book, One Vancouver usually runs from May through September, but the expanded The Host City Reads program will continue to early December to capture and contribute to the city’s growing excitement in the lead up to the 2010 Winter Games.

In The Crazy Canucks, author Janet Love Morrison, tells of the courage and high spirits of Canada’s legendary ski team in the ‘70s and ‘80s—Dave Murray, Dave Irwin, Ken Read and Steve Podborski. As Canadians approach the 2010 Olympics with high hopes for their ski teams, The Crazy Canucks provides a timely look at a most distinguished—and colourful—chapter in our nation’s sporting history.

Janet Love Morrison travelled extensively across Canada, Europe and South America to research this book. She interviewed over seventy people: competitors such as Franz Klammer, coaches, family members, journalists, trainers and many others. In 1997 she worked with Summerhill Productions on the CBC’s Life and Times: These Crazy Canucks. Love Morrison lives in North Vancouver, BC.
