Dr. Murray A. Newman Makes a Splash with the Order of BC Award

Posted: August 9, 2006

Dr. Murray Newman, founding curator of the Vancouver Aquarium, was recently awarded the Order of BC—the highest form of recognition the Province extends to its citizens. This particularly notable award recognizes individuals who excel in their field in ways that benefit the people of the Province and elsewhere.

Newman was director of the Aquarium from 1956 to 1993 and oversaw the facility from its humble beginnings—when it was without collecting equipment or even a cash register—and is now the author of Harbour Publishing’s recent release: People, Fish and Whales. The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre is today a major biological institution, internationally recognized for its exhibits and its programs in education, conservation and research. Over the past 50 years the Aquarium has welcomed 30 million visitors to the underwater world and introduced generations of schoolchildren to the importance of conservation.
